Breeding Overview

A male and a female Wryval are required to produce an egg.

Wryvals can only breed during specific periods of their lifecycle. Breeding can happen when a Wryval is between the ages of 14 days and 180 days. A Wryval less than 14 days old can be bred if a Potion of Awakening is used to bring it to maturity. This potion will not affect the Wryvals age.

After breeding, both the male and female cannot breed again for 7 days while their bodies recover. A Draught of Pheromones can be used to allow their bodies to recover faster.

Once an egg is produced, the egg requires 3 days to fully incubate. A Philter of Growth can be used to incubate the egg immediately.

Aesthetic Characteristics

To determine the aesthetic characteristics of a new Wryval, each parent will donate one of their genes at random. Those two genes combine to determine the appearance of their offspring. Some genes are recessive, where both parents need to donate the same gene for a characteristic to appear, some are dominant where they take precedence over other genes, and some are co-dominant where they combine to make something all together different.

Performance Characteristics

The performance characteristics of the offspring are determined in a similar fashion. Each Wryval has a value for the potential which they can achieve in each characteristic. Each parent donates one of those values which is combined to make the offspring’s value.

Typically, the offspring’s potential value will be somewhere in between the values of the Mother and Father, though sometimes the genetic information is such a good match, that the sum of the two is better than the individual, and the child’s potential is higher than that of the Mother of Father. Similarly though, sometimes a genetic match is not at all compatible and the combination of the Mother and Father will yield an offspring that is worse than either parent individually.

In-Breeding

It is important to have a diverse genetic pool. In-breeding can have an adverse effect on the performance characteristics of your Wryval. If there are too many common relatives from both the Mother and Father, then the offspring produced will see a decrease in the potential of their performance characteristics. For this reason, it is important to regularly introduce new Wryvals into your gene pool. Wryvals outside of your blood lines can be bought at either the in-game store or from other players at auction.

Colouring

The colouring of a Wryval works similar to their aesthetic characteristics. All Wryvals inherit genes from each parent that determine their colour.

This colour combination can occur differently for each of the following body parts:

  • Body Colour – This is the main colour of the Wryvals body. The highlights of the Wryvals body will have a corresponding colour as shown in the charts below.
  • Eye Colour – The Wryvals eyes use the main colours only.
  • Bone Colour – The Wryvals bone structure use the main colours only. The bones include both the Wryvals horns, and dorsal spikes

Colour combinations work as follows:

Pure Colours

This group contain Blues, Reds, and Yellows. These colours are all recessive and need each parent to donate that colour for the offspring to receive it. All Wryvals that are bought from the store contain these colours.

Halfling Colours

This group contains Purples, Oranges, and Greens. Halflings are the result of two Pure colours combining.

Mixed Colours

This group contains lighter and darker shades of the Pure and Halfling colors. These colours are achieved when you mix a Pure colour with a Halfling colour, or a Halfling with a Halfling colour.

Mutt Colours

This group contains many shades of browns and greys. These colours are very common. A Mutt colour is achieved when you breed a Mixed or a Mutt colour with anything else.

Rare Colours

There are two extremely rare colours that are very difficult to breed. These are Ivory and Midnight. The circumstance in which these colours show up is not entirely understood, but if you do breed a Wryval with these colours, you know you have something very special!

Colours can be tricky things when combined. Sometimes an offspring will show a higher level colour as compared to the two colours combined from its parents. Even when combining two Mutt colours, it is possible for a Mixed, Halfling, or Pure colour to show up.

New colours are being found in the wild all the time!
